Oregon で何をしていたかって、ワイン三昧していました。何気なく飛び込んできた、ワイナリーめぐり５日間の旅のお誘いでした。準備もいろいろあるし、と迷いましたが、せっかくの機会なので参加させていただきました。ナパで思いを馳せていた、死ぬほどワイナリーを周り続けるという夢がこんなに簡単に現実に！場所は、オレゴンとの州境に流れるコロンビア川周辺（ワシントン州側）と、タマネギで有名なワラワラです。

コロンビア渓谷と、川と、ビンヤードと。ナパともオレゴン（ピノで有名なウィラメット地域）ともまた違った景色が広がります。ドライブも楽しいもの。ワシントンのワイナリーの歴史は１９９０年代に始まった、まだ新しいものです。近くにありながら、ピノはまったくと言ってよいほど栽培されておらず、イタリア品種とカルベネが中心です。カルベネ大好きな私としては嬉しい限り。
ソムリエの振りをする我が夫。しかしながら、私たちは、おいしければ何でもいんです！ナパのCardinaleを体験してしまったので、すっかり良いワイン探しに夢中になりました。リザーブにお金を払う価値って本当にあるのですね。比べ飲みしてみると、本当に深みが違う。（って私たちにさえわかるんです。）
Jeff tasting wine (or water?)
今回はジェフのご両親とニックのご両親と一緒でした。もっと細かくいろんな情報を書き込みたかったのですが、時間がとれず・・・残念。参加者全員が気に入ったのは、以下のワイナリーでした。
- Pepper Bridge - 文句なしに今回回ったワイナリーの中で一番のおいしさ。しかし値段も相当（ワシントンにしては）。一本５０ドル以下では購入できないかと。
- Zerba－コストパフォーマンスで一番。しかし一般店では入手は難しいかも。テイスティングルームがユニークなログハウス風なのも楽しい。
- Northwest－総合的にバランスとれてました。ワインカウンターのライトで、ワインの粒が見える！セールスの人の説明とそのトーンが抜群。
- Cascade Cliffs－イタリア品種がおいしい。こっそりだしてくれた２００４年のリザーブは秀逸。テイスティングルームは飾り気ないし、ピクニックもできないけど、ワインの味は最高。
総評：ワイナリーのよさを決めるのは、テイスティングルームじゃない！（最近、本当にファンシーにしているところが多いけど。）味もさることながら、セールスの人の印象ってとても大事なんですね。
Our four favorite wineries in alphabetical order:
Cascade Cliffs: a small winery nestled in the Columbian gorge hosted by an unpretentious local willing to crack open an old fifty dollar bottle of wine just because my mom is cool (and Italian).
Northwest Vineyards: a much larger operation with the wines to match the grandeur. They also have a cool wine bar made from a translucent white rock which glows. The host was also friendly, genuine, and unpretentious.
Pepperbridge: a nice winery with two excellent cabernet savignons. With solely two wines for their tasting, it overshadowed everything else. Perhaps the best wine of the trip.
Zerba: a wonderful overall experience. The wine was top-notch, plus they have a beautiful wine tasting room. The tasting room was a small cabin made from cedar logs from John Day, OR. Eventhough the cabin emitted a potent cedar fragrance, it did not impact the great tasting wines. Kinda counterintuitive. Go figure.
