San Blas: Coconut Farms

男のクナさん達は、ココナッツを育てて、コロンビアに輸出しています。商売のためにヤシの木を植えたのだそうで、もともとはマングローブだったそうです。南の島っていうとヤシの木を想像するけれど、人工的に育てられてるんですね。

Half of Isla Robinson consists of a large field of palm trees, where they harvest large quantities of coconuts. In general, the Kuna grow lots of coconuts to sell (mostly to Colombia). In fact, the palm trees are not native to the islands, but rather a couple hundred years ago the Kuna cut down mangroves so they could plant palm trees and sell to passing ships.

ステイしていたロビンソン島にも、ヤシの木が茂ってました。島のところどころに、新しく生えてきているヤシの木が。貝殻で一応囲いがしてあります。

缶詰のココナッツミルクに描かれている、ヤシの実の中身がごろごろ。１ドル払うと、ココナッツを食べさせてくれます。さくさくしてて、程よい甘さでなかなかおいしかったです。

クナのオヤジ。この島で生まれて、２０年間ココナッツを育てているそうです。夜はいっつも酔っ払ってましたよ、このおっさん。そして、酔った勢いで、「観光客は苦手だ！」って観光客の私達にこぼしてました。ビールを何本もご馳走してくれました。

This is Mr. G-nzalez breaking open the outer shell to get to the coconut. One night Mr. G-nzalez came over to our table with cold beer as gifts for the holiday. We began chatting and listening to some festive "musica tipica" from Colombia that was playing from his stereo in the kiosk next door. (The stereo as well as the refridgerator of cold beer is powered by solar panels on the island). He said that he was born on this Isla Robinson and he has grown coconuts his entire life but recently there were more and more tourists. "Too many tourists," he added. Initially, this made us a little uncomfortable. So we asked if he liked tourists and he replied honestly, "no."

And we soon saw why. After Mr. G-nzalez left back for the kiosk, a very annoyed French guy came up to us and asked if that was our music playing so loud. He complained that he came to island to relax and listen to the waves. The music robbed him of his "tropical paradise." We directed him toward the kiosk where he complained at Mr. G-nzalez about the music and then left back to his cabana. But the music continued playing... all night long. Tourists weren't about to ruin his celebration. We smiled.

ほぼ全ての島にヤシの木がはえているようです。南の島にヤシの木はやっぱり絵になるな～。

San Blas: Rio Sidra and Molas

クナさんの集落になっている島、リオ・シドラに連れて行ってもらいました。島全体に密集してお家が立ち並んでいます。学校や病院もありました。クナさんはすごくシャイでした。そして、とってもアウトサイダーな気持ちになりました。タイムスリップしたみたいな町並みに、とっても浮いてしまう、アジア人と白人という組み合わせ・・・。子供達ははだし＆素っ裸で走り回ってました。独立記念日のお祭り中ということもあって、写真は遠慮してくださいといわれました。（クナ族には、西洋にもパナマ政府にもコロンビア政府にも屈せず、１９２５年に自治権を勝ち取ったという歴史があります。）

集落に行く楽しみは、モラショッピング。なんと、ブラウスになっている本物のモラを買うことができました！表・裏両方にモラが縫い付けてあるこのブラウス、なんと２０ドルという衝撃的な安さ。１枚縫うのに、最低４０時間かかるといわれてます。ブラウスはクナさんが自分達が着る用に作ったものです。なのでトラディショナルな抽象柄。ああ、素敵です。実際に着てみたかったのですが（こっそりと）、クナさんは世界で２番目に小さい民族ゆえに、私にはまる訳もなく・・・。

そして、ついに初のモチーフモラも購入しました！周りには不評な、不細工ネコちゃんです。すごい顔してるので、拡大して見てみてね（特に口と眉毛）。１つ目のモチーフモラは絶対に猫と決めてたのですが、購入の決め手となったのは、お花を握っている手の、肉球でした～。ああ、ぶさかわ。

San Blas: Relax

で、毎日何してたかって。こんな孤島で。まず、朝起きたら波打ち際にイスをセットして、読書。

First thing in the morning: reading on the beach. Sometimes, even before breakfast.

日が上がってきたら、スノーケル。珊瑚が残ってるんです。この海には。魚いっぱーい見られます。ランチを挟んで、何度もスノーケル。

Snorkeling, snorkeling, and snorkeling. Before lunch, and after lunch. The Robinson Island has this beautiful coral. Not too big, but it's beautiful. We could see a lot of fish within a short swimming distance.

疲れたらお昼ね。ゆらゆらゆら～。クナさんたちの使うハンモックは、布張りなので、安定感抜群で、気持ちよいです。

Nap time after snorkeling. The hammok in Panama is made of cotton fabric, which is alot better than the netted ones. This one is made in Colombia. Very stable and comfortable.

午後のお約束。ニカラグア産のラム酒をしっかり持参してきましたよ！電気が無い（=冷蔵庫がない）もしくは、キオスクが気まぐれにしか開かない場所でビールが手に入らなくても、しっかりおいしくいただけるお酒～。ああ、天国だすー。

We were wise enough to bring a bottle of nice rum, which is recommended by multiple friends. Taste the best at room temperature. It was really good. The rum, Flor de Cana, is made in Nicaragua. When the Kiosk is not open or there is simply no electricity to generate power for the frige, this works wonders.

なにも言うことはありません。ああ、リラックス～。

Just a very relaxing time. Even the dogs sat around smoking.

San Blas: Food

朝早くからコーヒーサービスがあります。さすがコーヒー産地のパナマ、こんな人里離れていてもなかなかおいしいコーヒーでした。

Every morning starts with a cup of coffee or two or three. It's a pleasant surprise to have such a good coffee (note: coffee is one of the major commodities that Panama offers.)

魚がご飯といっしょに毎日出されます。これは鯛かな？グリルしてすぐのあたたかい魚料理はおいしいです。魚が嫌いな人には辛い毎日かもしれません。

Everyday, we had fish like this with rice. Very fresh and tasty! If you do not like fish, San Blas may not be a place you want to visit.

ビーチにボートを横付けして、蟹やらロブスターやらを売りに来る人がいます。大型蟹２杯と、ロブスター４匹を１０ドルで購入。クナさんがゆでてくれました。

Occasionally, boat men will come to sell crabs and lobsters. We could have bought 2 big crabs and 4 lobsters for $10. But we decided that two crabs would be more than enough.

San Blas: Boats

San Blas での移動手段は、ボート。内陸と島々を、こんな木の小さなボートで行き来するのです。乾季は風があるので、ひっくり返りそうで、結構怖いです。乗っている時は、小さな桶で、船に溜まった水をかき出さなければいけません。クナさんの民族衣装が海の色に映えます。

Boats are the primary mode of transportation.

ビーチでごろごろしていると、こういうお兄さんが、蟹やらロブスターやらを売りにきます。それが終わると、島から本島へモノを運んだりしてます。蟹２杯、ロブスター４匹を１０ドルでお買い上げ。やすっ。

Some have motors.

子供でもボートを操れるんですって。小さい時から習うらしい。サンブラスには子供がものすごくたくさんいるんです。人口の三分の二が子供っていう話も。

観光客用でな船には、モーターがついてません。こんな風に布をはった帆船で風の力で移動してます。ものすごく時間がかかりそう。ここでは時間がものすごくゆっくり流れているのです。

San Blas: Cabana Robinson

これが泊まったカバナ。ドアは、無い。
This is the Cabana we stayed. No door.



これがベット。床は、無い。シーツも無い。壁は、サトウキビ。
This is our bed. No floor, no sheets.
The wall is made of sugar canes.

ルームメイトは、蟹さん。夜、砂から出てきます。

これ、世界で一番大きなトイレ。海にぽっちゃん。
屋根は、無い。ドアも、無い。

No need for a roof or door.

これ、キッチン。飯盒炊爨ね。キャンプだす。

でも、いんです。ドアから海まで歩いて１０歩だから。

San Blas: Beaches at Isla Robinson

カーニバルの連休を利用して、カリブ海のサンブラス諸島（クナ・ヤラ自治区）へ行ってきました。いやいあや、驚きと幸福感と、疲労と、なんとも非日常的な ３泊４日でした。シティから１日一本しかない飛行機（しかも朝６時の便のみ）でほんの３０分、そこからひっくり返りそうなボートで１時間（救命胴衣なども ちろんなく、そしてずぶぬれ）。島は本当に小さくて、対岸が見えます。

We arrived at 8:00 am (drenched head to toe from the 1 1/2 hour boat ride) at the beautiful island of Mr. Robinson's. Well worth the ride. A week earlier when we called to make reservations, somebody else answered the phone and when we asked to speak to Sr. Robinson, they shouted "Senor ROBINSON!!!!" as if calling to him at the next island over. I could only imagine that there was a pay phone sticking out of the sand with waves lapping up against it and Sr. Robinson was on a boat out at sea. As it turned out, that wasn't too far from the truth. On another island they have a pay phone, and whoever is there picks up the phone and then hunts down Senor Robinson. He's a mysterious man. We never met him, but they say he wanders the islands at night.

島の周りを囲むのは、本物のコーラルサンド！ふっかふかです。クナさん達は、この島では裸足で生活してます。

The beach was amazing. The sand was so soo soft. I mean look at these footprints. It was like walking on sand pillows in space.

泊まったホテル（っていうか掘っ立て小屋みたいなカバナ）の目の前のビーチ。いやいや、本当に来てよかった。やっぱりカリブ海は水の色がソーダブルーだわ。太平洋側とは格段の違いです。１０メーターほど泳げば、すぐそこに珊瑚があって、カラフルな魚達が泳いでます。

The driftwood was pretty too.

サンブラス諸島には、大小３５０余りの島が点在しています。無人島もたくさんあるみたいです。私達が滞在したのは、ロビンソン島です。クナ族の家族も住んでいますが、主には観光客用のカバナが１０棟ほど建っているだけの、小さな島です。

Even the flowers were okay.

乾季なので、少し風があります。が、波がたってもこれくらい。風があるおかげで、ぜんぜん汗はかきませんでした。夜は涼しいくらい。

The waves also passed inspection.

小さな島では何もすることがありませんから、朝に晩に、ビーチをお散歩。ビーチコーミングに励む私。おかげさまで、真っ黒になりました。

ある朝の収穫。珊瑚とか、貝殻とか、山のように落ちてます。インテリア用にお持ち帰り。

ビーチには倒れてしまったヤシの木もあれば、こんな風に頑張ってたっているヤシの木も。根っこがなかなかグロテスク。

Palm trees have neat roots.

Feria de Afro Antillano

パナマに住む黒人さんたちのお祭りに行ってきました。アフロ・アンティヤーノと呼ばれるこの人々の多くは、パナマ運河建設の時にジャマイカやバルバドスから移民してきた、奴隷の子孫達です（ジェフの研究対象でもあります）。ダンスや太鼓のショーもあるのですが、一番のお目当ては、お食事。お魚さんが丸揚げされてます。スパイスが効いてて、おししい！これは、通常パナマでよく見かけるコルビーナ（スズキ）ではなくて、サバ。大きさによって、１匹３００円から５００円。うまうま。

これは、タラをつぶして揚げたもの。つみれ？はんぺん？さつま揚げ？辛いソースをかけていただきます。１つ７５円。これもまた、おいしい！

そして、最後にカレー味のチキン。ジャマイカにはインド系の労働者も多かったとのことで、食文化にも影響があるのだそうです。ご飯には豆と牛肉が混ざっていて、ココナッツで炊いたもの。これまたおいしい！色んな民族のことを知るには、食から入るのが一番！パナマは魚介類が本当に豊富です。

How Things Work: Critical Condition

Its Carnival time here! The archive on Friday closed two hours early and during my walk back home at 2 o'clock I witnessed the mass exodus out of Panama City for the interior for days of drunken debauchery.

Hopefully people will be safe. When I got back to the apartment I heard ambulance sirens and automatically uttered, "God rest their soul."

Our friend Ally (who works at a hospital here) says, "if you're in critical condition in Panama City it means you're dead." Traffic doesn't move and the ambulances usually can never get to the injured party in time. Let alone get them to a hospital.

Here is a visual that illustrates why critical condition = dead.

Notice the ambulance trying to get to some poor dying person. Sirens on and horns blowing. Now, notice the white four-door sedan in the top left corner.

Instead of staying out the way, this asshole in the sedan cuts in front of the ambulance... even when the traffic isn't moving!! Some day (hopefully soon) that jerk will be in critical condition. I just hope whoever and wherever the person is in need of that ambulance will be okay.

So be safe celebrating Carnival wherever you may be! On Sunday, we're headed off to San Blas for three days.

Carnival, 2009

カーニバルが始まりましたよ！カーニバルはブラジルだけじゃないんですよ！イースター（キリストの復活祭）前の４０日間は、カトリック教徒にとっての断食の期間で、その断食が始まるアッシュ・ウェンズデー（灰の水曜日）の前、５日間がカーニバルです。断食が始まる前に、飲みまくって食べまくって、騒ぎまくろうってやつです。こうやって、高速道路をせき止めて、夜な夜な飲んで踊り狂うのだそうです。もちろん、市役所をはじめ、全てのオフィスはクローズ。よって、また連休。

After the causeway, we came back closer to home where they closed down the Transithmica (a major road) for Carnival. We enjoyed all the sights and smells ...and some beer.

人々は道端でビールを飲んでて、コンサートがあちらこちらで開催されています。昼間は、消防車による放水があります。よって、洋服はびしょびしょ。５日間、寝ないで騒ぐそうです。パナマのカーニバルの本場は、インテリオール（内地）のラスタブラスだそうですが、ひ弱な私には、シティで十分。ラスタブラスには２万人くらいの人が訪れるそうです。おそろしい・・・。

こんな変な道化師みたいなのが沢山いました。パナマのお祭り＆パレードはもうお腹一杯なので、私達は日曜からカリブの島に非難します。夜２時くらいまで花火がバンバン上がってて、眠れないったりゃありゃしない。ラテンの血が騒ぐカーニバルですな。ちなみに、パナマにはカーニバルベイビーがたくさんいるんですって。
