Mola for Valentine's Day

今月のモラ。モチーフモラを買おうと思うのに、いっつもオールドモラに惹かれてしまう。今回もまた抽象図形のトラディショナルモラを購入しました。売ってくれたクナさんはとても良い人でした。来週サンブラス諸島（クナ族の自治区）に行くので、島話に花が咲き、楽しかったです。

見て！この細かさ。全部、手縫いなんです。この細くてギザギザの部分、いったいどれくらいの時間がかかったのだろう・・・。すごいなー。

モチーフモラは大きな柄で、アップリケのようになっているのですが、オールドモラは、何層にも布が重なっているのです。これは、４枚重ね。簡単にはできない柄だよってクナさんは言ってました。１枚１枚買い足すたびに、益々モラの魅力にはまってゆく。来週のサンブラス、楽しみだなー。

Universtiy of Panama

私の通学路。トロピカル～。スペイン語のクラスをパナマ大学でとり始めました。３ヶ月のコースで＄１４０。クラスは９０分で、週４回あります。まあ、教え方は日本の英語のクラスみたいな、「使えないスペイン語」的な教え方です。でも、そういう授業も好きなので、安いし満足してます。文法とか分からないのにしゃべる、というのに違和感があるので、文法中心のクラスは逆にありがたかったりします。（だからなかなかしゃべれるようにならない・・・。）　先生はコミカルでよい人で、日本のこと大好きみたい。

校舎に続く通路。こんな通路が大学中をぐるぐる走ってます。日本の合宿所みたい。看板とかほとんど立っていないので、スペイン語プログラムを探すのも本当に一苦労でした。アメリカ人によるネット情報を利用して、迷路のような校舎の中をぐるぐる歩き回りました。もっとユーザーフレンドリーにすれば生徒も増えるのに、なんて考えるのは先進国出身のインテンスな人の考えること。

１番の不満といえば、レベル分けテストがなかったことと、「生徒の数が足りないから」っていう理由で中級クラスに無理やり入れられちゃったこと。テキサスで１つめのクラスをとったけど、すっかり中間が抜けて、３つ目のクラスに入っちゃったような感じです。自分のレベルにあったクラスを探すのも、本当に容易じゃないんです。パナマでは。パナマへのスペイン語留学は、コスタリカやグアテマラのようにポピュラーじゃないようです。理由は、物価が中米の他の国にくらべて安くないから。とにかくチョイスが少ないから、もう自分にあったクラス探しは諦め、ここに３学期くらいお世話になる予定です。ちなみに来学期はベーシッククラスに逆戻りすることを希望中。

How things are in Panama 1

Here's a day in the life of doing day-to-day errands in Panama City. First stop, Cable Wireless. Take a number, sit down, and watch something akin to "America's Funniest Videos" (ooh, another groin shot -hilarious!). This keeps the waiting masses occuppied. Meanwhile, five to eight workers behind the counter play on the computer, talk, wander around, or try to look busy. Everybody, just keep enjoying the HD TV... Notice the picture: no customers being helped. Or when they do help you and you ask to change the internet speed. They say okay and type alittle on the computer, pause, send a quick text message on their cell phone. Type a little more on the computer, answer their cell phone, make dinner plans, type a little. Repeat cycle for 15 minutes or so.

シリーズでお伝えします。パナマの日常。まずはこのオフィス編の例として、インターネット＆携帯電話のサービス会社。どこに行っても異様に従業員が多い。なのに、だれも働いてませーん。こんなに沢山待っている人がいるのに。でも、パナマ人はとても我慢強いです。だれも文句を言いません。

But we got a little ahead of ourselves. The number, you need a number first. Numbers make sense, you need numbers to keep track of who is waiting in line. The great thing is, getting the number is a free-for-all. No line to get your number you just go up to the counter and try to be the first one to get it while the person working is chatting on the phone. Then there is those times when the worker is waiting on the customer to get off the phone, but my favorite is when the worker and the customer are on the phone at the same time. Who needs the DMV when you have Cable Wireless.

携帯電話のマナーはありません。見て！４人中、３人は電話中。サービスをする人も平気で私用電話をするし、サービスを受けている最中の人も平気で携帯電話にでます。だから、なかなか次の人に番が周ってこない。あ、それから、パナマ人は列を作るってことをしません。割り込んでいくのが常識です。

こんなパナマが嫌にならないかって？すでに１度なりましたが、今はもう、受容の時です。アメリカなんて比じゃないですよ。イライラしない秘訣は、まず待ち時間のための本と冷房対策の上着を持ち歩くこと。そして１日に２つ以上のモノゴトを済ませようとしないこと。

Instituto Geographico Nacional

パナマの国土地理院のようなところに行ってきました。そこで、おっきなパナマの地図を購入。にんまり。私、自他共に認める、大の地図好き。１日中地図を眺めていられる人です。この地図、二枚組みで、自分でテープをもってきて貼り付けないといけないところが、すごくパナマ。ただのカラーコピーやんけ！っていう突っ込みを入れつつ、お家に帰って、要らない部分を切って、テープで合体させて、壁に貼り付けました。旅行の計画がまた楽しくなりました。

この国土地理院、貧民街のど真ん中にあって、危険な地区らしいです。タクシーで行ったんですが、外に出ないようにって、タクシーの運転手に注意されました。おぉ怖い。そして帰りはなんと、職員がタクシーを見つけてきてくれました。

Smalls: We never were relevant. That’s the key.

St. Hubbins: We never had the pain of seeing relevance slip away from us.

Agua de Pipa for summer

ゆるりと暮らしていたはずでしたが、最近めっきり忙しくなってしまいってブログともご無沙汰でした。歯医者に行って神経抜いたり（怖かった）、ちょっとお仕事始めちゃったり、スペイン語のクラスで落ちこぼれたり、親＆友人との旅行の計画したりしています。相変わらず街をぐるぐる歩き回ってます。お仕事始めたので、行動範囲がまた広がりました。

週末はこうやって、パナマらしくのんびりしてますけども。椰子の実です。これ、ものすごい量なんですよ。１個１ドル。仲良しのアリーちゃんと。椰子のみジュースって、ポカリやゲーターレードのような成分があるのではないかと思うのです。水分補給にばっちり。

アリーちゃんのフィアンセ、グレンくん（とジェフ）。ジェフは相変わらず幸せそうに毎日図書館に通ってますよ。国立図書館でのリサーチは一旦一区切りして、今はパナマ大学の図書館にあるアーカイブに通ってます。

生活のスケジュールに慣れてきたので、またブログアップします。

Panama la Vieja 2

また行ってきました、オールドパナマ。それはそれはよく晴れた土曜日に。街の喧騒から程よく離れているので、静かで落ち着くお散歩道です。

This weekend we went to Panama Viejo again. And guess what? The ruins were still there.

前回は雨が降ってきて行くのを断念した、一番古い（有名な）橋。よくパンフレットなんかに載ってます。しかし、下に流れているのは下水道・・・。観光地整備が進むといいな。

But this time we actually saw Puente del Rey. Kind of a let down. But now we can say that we've seen it. There is supposed to be water that flows underneath the bridge, but really its just sewage, syringes, the plastic six-pack tops that seagulls kill themselves on, TV parts, used-condoms, and some unfortunate turtle trying to find his way out of the god-forsaken hell hole. (That's what we're looking at in the picture -the turtle. I'm pondering to jump in and help...)

暑くて、でも風があって気持ちよい午後でした。

Super Fun Happy Chinese Prison Camp!!!

I learn something new everyday. For instance, just yesterday I found out that prisons in China are really just super-fun-happy-summer-prison-camps! Really its just a "special school" where "chatting is another way of knowing and helping wrongdoers."

Who knew prison could be so idyllic?

Wrongdoer: "Hey Mr. Prison Officer, did you see the flowers blooming over here? Aren't they just swell? Sir, you don't mind if we just chit chat a bit do you? I have some things to get off my chest...'

And who knew the enriching wonders of child prison labor?

Headmaster Gaurd: "Oh, here son, did your machine jam again? Let me show you how to get back work. Ha, ha isn't this fun?"

Prisoners in China also receive top-notch legal consultations.

Mr. Lawyer: "Well, let me look through your papers one more time.... nope. It looks like you're screwed!"

Suspected Wrongdoer: "But Mr. Lawyer sir, there isn't any evidence to support my incarceration..."

Mr. Lawyer: "Hmm.... well, let us fill out some more paper work and we'll see what we can do. Give us a call, hmm, say next year. And in the mean time, I hear there a nice garden in the back. The flowers should be starting to bloom about this time of year..."

I just wish the Bush Administration could have done a better job at informing the public of the super-happy-fun-summer-camp in sunny Guantanamo Bay, Florida (?).

Santa Clara

日曜日。サンタクララのビーチに日帰りで泳ぎに行ってきました。シティから車で１時間３０分。太平洋側のビーチです。

パブリックエリアから少し離れたら、誰もいませんよー。砂はサラサラだし、海はキレイだし、言うこと無し！これぞ、夢見たビーチ生活＠パナマ。

イスを設置して、ビールを飲んでみたり。おしゃべりして、お昼寝して、まったーりな昼下がり。

ちっさな波で無理やりボディボードしてみたり。波に身を任せて、ぷかぷか浮かんでみたり。

ビーチ沿いには素敵な邸宅がずらりと並んでおります。ブーゲンビリアが門構えをぐっと南国チックに彩っていて。あー。海沿いにいつか住みたいな～。

また来たいね～。次回は地元バスに揺られて来てみるぞい。

The Orchid Center of El Valle

The following post is part V (the finale) of a special Potsusaker Post series on a weekend trip to El Valle with our friends Blake and Lisette.

エルバジェで一番楽しかったのは、この蘭センターです。エルバジェからの帰る直前に寄ってきました。地域経済発展と、エルバジェの蘭保全を目的に、日本人の方々が運営されています。この入り口にあった蘭、２０日に１回咲き、たった１日の命だそうです。ラッキーな日に見学に来ました。

Our last stop before leaving El Valle was the Orchid Center, a non-profit group run by some old Japanese men who speak Japanese, English, and Spanish. We arrived on a very, very special day. The purple orchids pictured above only bloom once a year for one day only. And that was the day we were there! Neat!

日本やアメリカで人気の胡蝶蘭を栽培して、市場で売るそうです。そうすることで、地元の人々に仕事ができ、野生の蘭を乱伐が少なくなるということです。蘭て、マニアックに好きな人多いのがうなずけます。花がすごくきれいというだけでなくて、寄生植物だから、土もほとんどいらないし、根っこが不思議な形。


The valley walls around El Valle are supposedly a rare place in the world where all sorts of unique and endangered orchids grow. If you go to the market in downtown El Valle, they sell these orchids for $5 a pop. According to the non-profit, that because of the lack of jobs people go up the mountains and harvest whatever orchids they can find to sell to the city's weekend tourists. The center is trying to grow common, non-native orchids for people to sell at the market as an alternative.

これはエルバジェ固有の蘭。すずらんみたいで可愛いです。ここには数百種類の蘭があるのではないでしょうか。種類によってはいいにおいがすんですよ！

The group says that they are trying to create different job opportunities to keep people from harvesting the orchids, but maybe they're really just trying to crush their competitors so they can be the only ones selling at the market. (To be fair the Orchid Center itself does not sell flowers at the market or even at the center).

これもエルバジェの蘭。形と色がきれいでサイズが大きいと乱伐の対象になり易いそうで、こちらも絶滅の危機だそうです。

日本人のガイドさんがおられ、丁寧に説明してくださいました。蘭に魅了されてじっくり見学してしまいました。違法に伐採される蘭が少しでも減りますように。
