Causeway, Amardor

We went to Amador Causeway for an evening out with Daya and Laura to begin Carnival. Very tranquilo.

Also a chance to admire the drug money errr... ridicuolously lavish luxury yatchs.

Haruki Murakami's Speech in Israel

On February 15, Haruki Murakami went to Israel to accept a literary prize despite threats of boycott. Check out his speech of why he decided to go and accept the honor:

Jeffrey's Dreams: My Two Osama Bin Ladens

Over the past two years (roughly) I have had two dreams featuring Osama Bin Laden. Curiously though, the Osama Bin Ladens of my dreams are two very different people. But, strangely, both are connected to my childhood. Let me explain...

I have a dream. I am a kid in the back of our blue Astro mini-van in Canby, Oregon at Simnitt Nursery in the gravel parking lot. Next to me is Osama Bin Laden. Like any other childhood friend. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Really. My friend Osama. Nice, likable, funny, smart, and very human.

While in the mini-van, we received some vaguely bad news. My buddy Osama had gotten into some big trouble. But we had no idea what it was. Before we knew it, Canby police cars role into the driveway as if its another routine traffic violation.

I panic, "shit, shit, shit. What do we do? Osama, quick, get down on the ground!"

So he sat with arms around knees on floor of mini-van while I covered him with newspapers before the police got to the window! As if they wouldn't see him under the daily headlines (we are talking Canby cops here).

Then I wake up.

A week and a half ago (approximately a year and a half later)...

I'm at a small empty baseball field standing between metal bleachers and a closed down concession stand.

I'm startled by a loud metal clang as a rock hits the dust nearby.

"Clang!"

"Oh, shit! Another rock!" I look up and on top of a nearby hill I see my "old buddy" Osama throwing rocks at me. The hill is now so close its pretty much on third base. Osama, smiling maliciously, thinks this is somehow fun for both of us.

Well, bleachers don't provide all that much protection so I head for the back of the concession stand. "Clang, clank, boom, clank." More rocks. Big ones too. Some friend. What an ass, but I don't know what to do.

I wake up. Oh shit, another Osama dream. Weird.

Jeffrey's Dreams: Bubbles, Hitchens, and Jumpers

Recently I have had too many crazy dreams not to share. The worst part of blogging dreams is its more difficult to post pictures. Regardless, I will be posting a regular series of my dreams for loyal Potsusaker readers.

Disclaimer: Naoko has warned me not to remember, analyze, or blog my dreams because I would risk driving myself insane. She may have departed this advice too late. I have always loved when I can remember my dreams. I wish I could record them on DVD/Ipod so I could have a sort-of home movies collection. Steve Jobs, get on it.

Now let's take a trip into my subconscious...

Last night: Some bad guys in space in a large translucent bubble preparing for the good guys' arrival. One of the gray haired bad guy's face is holographically projected in to the middle of the bubble and he gives a moniacal laugh.

I enter translucent bubble (zero gravity). But no more bad guys. Instead tumbler glasses and ice cubes float around while spinning along randomly in the bubble. I too am floating and spinning around like the ice cubes and tumbler glasses. Along with other faceless people, I try to catch the ice cubes with the tumblers.

After catching my first ice cube, gravity gently sets in. The bubble transforms into a square penthouse-like room. Four people sit separately in each corner (perhaps the bad guys but not so bad now). Christopher Hitchens is sitting with one leg crossed across his knee and a drink in hand (saying things you can imagine him saying while sipping on brandy). Meanwhile I'm trying to figure out what I do with a glass and an ice cube.

The Christopher Hitchens of my dreams...

Then I look out the window of the penthouse and see the capitol building in Austin with the UT tower directly behind it. On top of the tower, a bearded man in a red-flannel shirt appears. I think: "that's wierd, I thought they didn't let people go on top of the tower since that horrible shooting incident decades ago." Then the bearded man hops on the ledge and runs, but he has no pants on to cover his unhealthy-looking chicken legs. Then jumps off the tower. "Oh my god he's committing suicide!" His body disappears behind the capitol dome.

I move to get a better view. Suddenly two women appear on top of the tower and they begin running and jumping one right after another. "Oooohhh.. oooh..." I watch as they hit the ground. One bounces kind of funny. The other gets up and begins running again (presumably back up the tower). The funny bouncy one also gets back up (a little dizzy) and runs after the other woman. I look to see what happened to the red-flannel bearded dude. His limbs look in particularly bad shape (he did have skinny legs to begin with). Nevertheless, he gets up and meanders to a gazebo next to the tower and sits down to rest. I begin looking up the tower as a third woman jumps. She falls down head first. She hits bottom with no chance of recovery. A nice splat. No bounces. No blood. Just splat.

I wake up.

Playa Rio Mar

Mola for Valentine's Day

Universtiy of Panama

How things are in Panama 1

Here's a day in the life of doing day-to-day errands in Panama City. First stop, Cable Wireless. Take a number, sit down, and watch something akin to "America's Funniest Videos" (ooh, another groin shot -hilarious!). This keeps the waiting masses occuppied. Meanwhile, five to eight workers behind the counter play on the computer, talk, wander around, or try to look busy. Everybody, just keep enjoying the HD TV... Notice the picture: no customers being helped. Or when they do help you and you ask to change the internet speed. They say okay and type alittle on the computer, pause, send a quick text message on their cell phone. Type a little more on the computer, answer their cell phone, make dinner plans, type a little. Repeat cycle for 15 minutes or so.

But we got a little ahead of ourselves. The number, you need a number first. Numbers make sense, you need numbers to keep track of who is waiting in line. The great thing is, getting the number is a free-for-all. No line to get your number you just go up to the counter and try to be the first one to get it while the person working is chatting on the phone. Then there is those times when the worker is waiting on the customer to get off the phone, but my favorite is when the worker and the customer are on the phone at the same time. Who needs the DMV when you have Cable Wireless.

Instituto Geographico Nacional

Happy Anniversary Spinal Tap!!

Please join the Potsusaker Post in congratulating Spinal Tap on their Silver Anniversary. A toast to 25 years of pretentious rock music!

Top row (left to right): Marty, David St. Hubbins
Bottom row (left to right): Nigel Tufnel, Derek Smalls

How could we go on living with out such classics as:

(Begin music and scroll)
Tonight We're Gonna Rock You

Bitch School
Stonhenge
Sex Farm
Hell Hole (Naoko's personal favorite)
Listen to the Flower People (Jeff's personal favorite)
Big Bottom (T's personal favorite)

Here's an excerpt from a recent interview with Vanity Fair magazine:

VF: How do you stay relevant after all these years?

Smalls: We never were relevant. That’s the key.

St. Hubbins: We never had the pain of seeing relevance slip away from us.

Tufnel: You can’t chase relevance. You can’t be wed to it. You can’t look at it like a religion. If you look in the mirror and see it, you’ve made a mistake. That’s your first mistake.

Our Potsusaker hats go off to Nigel Tufnel, Derek Smalls, and David St. Hubbins as well as Marty and the crew. Happy Silver Anniversary!! Keep on rockin'.
