Celebrating in Obama, Japan. Nice, but I don't get the Hawaiian theme... Obama's from Hawaii... and Japan loves Hawaii?

We went to see the elections in a bar close to our apartment on CNN en español. The graphics, camera angles, and music are all the same. They even have those people who are pretending to work on labtops in front of the cameras (give me a break Wolf Blitzer and crowd!)

The reactions here in Panama City have been interesting. Everything from energetic enthusiasm to indifference. We asked the bartender who she wanted to win the election. With her right index finger she simply rubbed the top of left hand (indicating her skin color) and smiled broadly.

I've never before been "congratulated" on being "American." During my first day of full research (after many hours of being hunched over a microfilm machine), the door suddenly swung opened and I turned around a bit startled. A middle-aged man walked in to the small room and asked how I was doing. And then asked if I was "American." I replied in the affirmative. And he responded with: "congratulations!" A bit confused I asked, "...Why? ...Obama?" He confirmed with enthusiam, "El Presidente!!"

キューバレストランのもうひとつの楽しみは、御当地ビール。このブカネロ、アルコール6.5%で、素早く良い気分になれます。

これまたキューバビールの、クリスタル。アメリカでは、キューバ原産のモノが（合法的には）絶対に手に入らないので、パナマにいる間に楽しまなくては。

Cuban Restaurant

アルゼンチン通りにある、お気に入りのキューバレストラン。金曜日だから、久しぶりに外食。このレストラン、キューバ出身のリセットもお気に入りと言っていたので、間違いなく本場のキューバ料理だと思われます。後ろにちっさく写ってるのが、キューバ出身のオーナー。全部で6席という小さい店構えながら、いつもキューバ人で賑わってます。キューバのCDやら葉巻やらも購入できます。

This is our favorite restaurant in Panama City. It's a little Cuban joint with the best Vaca Frita. If you look closely, that's the owner sitting with his back on the wall watching TV. They usually play some great video recording of bands like the Fania All Stars. The tables are covered with CD covers of musicians like Beny More, Celia Cruz, etc. Pictures adorn the wall of rock stars like Ibrahim Ferrer and the owner (you know the typical small restaurant joint trying to play up their hipness and 'authentic quality.') Regardless, the food is great. And it's cheap to boot!

前菜は、プランテイン（甘くないバナナ）を揚げてお皿みたいにした中に、シーフードがトマト煮になって入ってる料理。これが、驚くほどおいしい！南の島ならではの組み合わせ。

メインは、この牛肉を割いて揚げたもの。ライスに豆をかけるのは一般的にモロスイクリスティアノス（Moros y Christianos) と呼ばれているもの。白人の上に黒人がのってるよって意味で、人種差別への対抗心を示している料理名。これまたシンプルな料理なんですが、おいしい。肉を噛めば噛むほど味がでてくるんです。

アメリカもそうだけど、パナマのように移民が多い国は、色んな国の料理が食べられて楽しいです。しゃれてなくて、本当に現地の人々が食べているような食事ができるのが醍醐味ですな。

So, instead of undercooking it, they over cook it two times over. Either way, I think I like that piece of the cow.)

First Day of School for N

今日からスペイン語学校が始まりました！ジェフのリサーチ活動も始まりました！日常ってものが始まって嬉しい限りです。その昔、まったく英語が話せなかった頃、ミニメモ張を持ち歩いていた私ですが、スペイン語版としてミニメモ張を復活させました。このちっさいノートをポケットに忍ばせて、こっそり見てからお話したり、こっそりわからないことを書き込んでおいたりするのです。

メモメモ張で確認しながら、早速クラスで習った言い回しを使って、カプチーノと、アルゼンチンのお菓子（初）を注文。しかしながら、途中で、「英語しゃべれる？英語でいいよ」って店員さんに言われちゃったけどもね・・・。渡米して間もない頃の「語学学習の悪夢」が再び・・・・。人が何を言っているのか全くわからない ＆ 自分の欲求さえも伝えられない！しかししかし、夏にスペイン語のクラスとっておいて、本当によかった。あれをとっていなかったら今頃、五里霧中でホームシックにかかっていたこと間違いなし。

ちなみにこのアルゼンチンのお菓子、とてもおいしかった（食べかけの写真ですみません）。

ところで、このコーヒー屋さん、アパートのあるアルゼンチン通り（パナマで一番オサレな通りよっ一応）に発見！「本日のスープ」とかもあって、（野菜摂取に）なかなか重宝しそう。明るい店内で、良い感じ。店員さんも良い人だったし。

通りを眺められる窓際の席で、宿題。パティオでは、すでにビール飲んでるヨーロッパ人達・・・・。私もまぜてくださーい。

Gamboa Resorts

Gamboa という街は、運河沿いにある街で、パナマシティーから車で約３０分くらい内陸に入ったところにあります。街自体はアメリカ軍が撤退してから廃墟のようになってしまいましたが、このリゾートだけは昔のまま繁盛しているようです。トロピカルなエントランスのお花。こんな田舎街にこんなリゾートがあったとはね。

いかにもアメリカ人好みの巨大プール。そして、綺麗にお手入れされているホテル内のお庭。その向こうに見えるのがチャグレス川。ガンボアは、運河の途中にある、ガツン湖という巨大湖にチャグレス川が流れ込んでいる地点にあります。運河建設当時、このチャグレス川が時折氾濫して、工事に多きな支障をきたしたそうです。

雄大に広がる熱帯雨林（ジャングル）。原住民（裸族）を訪ねるツアーとか、モンキーアイランド（スミソニアン研究所がある湖の中の島）でネイチャーツアーするとか、ジャングルの中をロープーウェイで周るツアーとかあります。なにしろ、パナマのジャングルには、ものすごい数の珍しい鳥がいるらしく、生物研究家や野鳥観察が趣味の人に言わせると、コスタリカよりも良いらしいです。（私はヘビがものすごく怖いので、ジャングルには入れない。）

私は、ジャングル見ながら、一杯やればそれで十分幸せ。南国風に、ピニャコラーダと、ストロベリーダイキリなんていうカワイイモノを頼んでみました。リゾート気分に負けた感満載ですが、おいしかった～。

Fiestas Patrias

The past three days almost all businesses have been closed for the Fiestas Patrias. The roads have been pleasantly quite. Except for Via Espana (the main road in town), which has been packed with people watching day-long parades whether rain or shine. The parades consist of people dressed in various uniforms beating on drums, blowing horns, crashing cymbals, twirling batons, dancing in polleras, and (of course) marching with swords and wooden guns. The same song is played repeatedly and the horn melody has been stuck in my head.

週末に独立記念日（なぜか３日連続）が重なって、５連休！働いていない＆学校行っていない私にとっては、ひじょーに暇ひまな５日間。近所のスペイン通りで、国を挙げてのパレードが行われるっていうんで、見学に行きました。スコールが降っても負けずにね。

お祭りとなると、屋台っていうのはどこの国でも同じですね～。たいしておいしくもなさそうなのに、匂いに負けて、ついつい買い食いしたくなるのは私だけ？

Girl Scouts!　発見！（私はガールスカウトだったので、ついつい目がいってしまうのです。）それにしても、通りには人人人人人だらけ。こんなに人が住んでいたのねーって感激しちゃいました。ちょこっと見に行くはずだったのに、結構楽しんでしまいました。ドラムの音もすごかったし、パレードってのもいいななんて思いました。昔、地元のお祭りで、ガールスカウトとしてパレードしたっけねーなんて思い出したりして。

These flags cover the greenway in front of the former US military base Fort Clayton right next to the Miguel Flores locks. Since, the transfer of sovereignty, the military base had been renamed Cuidad del Saber, which now hosts a wide array of NGOs. In 1964 a riot broke out when Panamanian students attempted to fly a Panamanian flag only to be confronted by Canal Zone police (the US). Violence broke out and students died. Anyway, this field of flags is a nice (if not too subtle) reminder of who has sovereignty over the canal.

これは、旧アメリカ軍の基地にびっしりと並べ立てられたパナマの国旗。１１月３・４・５は、コロンビアからの独立を記念するホリデーですが、やっぱり象徴的ですよね。パナマは、スペイン（1821年）、コロンビア(1931年）、アメリカ（2000年）からと３回独立していますので、独立記念日もたっくさんあるのです。パナマ人は祭り好きらしく、しょっちゅうパレードなどをするみたいです。

あ、そうそう、１１月は祝日が山盛りの月です。来週の月曜（１１月１０日）は、独立宣言日っていう祝日で３連休、そして１１月２８日はスペインからの独立記念日で３連休となっています。そして、クリスマス休暇もすぐそこなので、１１月以降はまったくもって仕事が進まない、というのがパナマの常識らいしですよ・・・・・・。

お願いだからネットだけは繋げておくれ。。。。

Love Breakfast in Panama

Panama で何が嬉しいって、フルーツが安くておいしいこと。パイナップルは国産で、すごーく甘くてジューシー。舌がイガイガするってことはまず無いですよん。そしてパパイヤは、今まで好きって思ったことなかったんですけど、パナマにきてからおいしくておいしくて、毎日食べるようになりました。毎朝、カットフルーツてんこ盛り（幸）。ヨーグルトをかけても美味。

（フルーツは糖分多いから太るよってコメントはなしね。）

The Panama Canal

We finally made our first trip to see the canal. Our friend Blake was kind enough to give us a personal car tour of the canal, Gamboa, Ciudad del Saber, the Pedro Miguel locks, Paraiso, Cerro Ancon, and the Amador Causeway. It was a lovely day. Although it sprinkled a bit, the afternoon turned out to be quit nice. The photo above is of a ship going into the Pedro Miguel locks. This was on our way out to Gamboa. While having dinner near the Causeway we saw this same ship on its way out to who knows where.

パナマと言えば、１００人中１００人が、思いつくのが「パナマ運河」。今日、ようやっと、運河観光にでかけました。ブレイク（友人）がドライブに連れて行ってくれました。といっても、一番有名で、（法外な観光料をとられる）ミラフローレンス閘門は、お客さんが来た時のためにとっておいくことにして、現地の人々も訪れる（一番マイナーな）ペドロミゲル閘門へ。太平洋側（パナマシティー側）から２０分くらい内陸に入ったところにあります。

2000年にパナマに返還されるまで、運河沿いの左右１６キロに渡る地域は、アメリカの領地になっていました。運河沿いを車で走っていると、巨大船がたくさん行ったりきたりしていて、圧巻のビューです。運河は２４時間動いていて、一日に４０船くらいが通過するそうです。通過料はものすごく高いのですって。

閘門にさしかかる大型貨物船。イタリアのコンテナを積んでるから、きっとヨーロッパから来たのかなー？ちなみに、カリブ海側の第三閘門が、一番観光地化されていないため、間近で通過する様子が見られるらしいですよ。

閘門とは？（豆知識）
水面の高さが太平洋側とカリブ海側で違うため、水量を調節し、水面を川のどちらかの高さと同じにしてから船を通す施設のことです。英語では、ロックと呼ばれています。

Page Not Found: Check Connection.

This is our new apartment. Nice tiled floor. Furnished. Huge windows. We love the mornings because its nice and cool with the windows open and the breeze. It's easy to spend an hour or two just drinking coffee and enjoying life. An added bonus is the view from the roof.

The fruit here is wonderful. We eat papaya every morning with yogurt and maybe with some pineapple or grapefruit or watermelon... hmm... papaya breakfast.

This is Einstein's head. That brown crap drippin from his eye is some type of animal feces. I know. I checked. I would guess a bird, a large rodent, or a sick human. Anyway, it gives Albert some character I guess.

November. Nothing gets done in November. NOTHING. The first week is to celebrate independence from Colombia. The last week is to celebrate independence from Spain. And the rest is just to celebrate. This makes it a little frustrating trying to get internet service. Right now we're bumming it off some neighbor. The connection is very very unreliable. Anyway, its fun to observe people getting excited about the holidays.
